From Classrooms to Canals: Language Learners Experience the Wonders of Italy
While the World Language Department at Mineola High School is known for bringing culture to life inside the classroom through simulations like mock weddings and Roman villa reconstructions, 42 learners recently took their studies on the road. During February break, the group embarked on a sweeping tour of Italy, trading their textbooks for the historic streets of Venice, Florence and Rome.
Led by Signor Piccirillo and a dedicated team of chaperones, the students began their adventure in Venice. The timing was perfect, as the city was alive with the vibrant energy of Carnival. Students explored the iconic Venetian canals by gondola before heading to the medieval city of Ferrara for a local lunch and historic exploration.
The journey continued south to Florence, where the group stood in awe of Michelangelo’s David and immersed themselves in the city’s famous traditions of leatherworking and gold. The cultural immersion extended to the palate, as students sampled authentic Florentine cuisine and, of course, plenty of local gelato.
The itinerary was packed with Italy’s most legendary sights, including:
- Pisa: A visit to the world-famous Leaning Tower.
- Orvieto: A stop to admire the stunning frescoes inside the main cathedral.
- Rome & Vatican City: The grand finale featured a visit to the Coliseum—one of the Seven Wonders of the World—along with climbs up the Spanish Steps and coin tosses at the Trevi Fountain.
The trip provided a perfect practical application for the department’s "real-life" philosophy. Whether they were navigating Roman menus or exploring ancient architecture, the students applied the skills they developed in the classroom to create memories that will last a lifetime.
A special thank you goes out to the Board of Education, the Mineola High School administration team and the parents whose ongoing support made this life-changing experience possible for our students.
