A Night of Discovery: Hampton Street Family STEAM Night

What happens when you mix curious minds, creative families and a whole lot of science? You get the Hampton Family STEAM Night! Our school was buzzing with energy as learners and their families dove headfirst into the worlds of Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math.
From the front doors to the back of the gym, the "Aha!" moments were everywhere. Here’s a look at the hands-on fun our innovators had:
🛠️ Engineering Marvels
Our young engineers put their physics skills to the test with high-stakes building challenges:
- Parachutes: Learners explored air resistance and gravity, designing chutes to ensure a soft landing.
- Sail Cars: Using the power of wind, families constructed vehicles to see just how far a simple breeze could take them.
- Foil Boats: It was all about buoyancy! Students folded and sculpted aluminum foil to see whose design could hold the most weight without sinking.
🧪 Colorful Chemistry
Things got a little messy (and a lot of fun) as we explored chemical reactions and viscosity:
- Slime Station: A fan favorite! Students learned about polymers while creating their own custom batches of gooey, stretchy slime.
- DIY Lava Lamps: By mixing oil, water and a little fizz, families created groovy, bubbling displays of density and carbon dioxide.
💡 Why STEAM Matters
Events like these aren’t just about the projects you take home; they are about problem-solving, perseverance and play. Whether a boat sank or a sail car zoomed, our learners were practicing the most important scientific skill of all: trying again.
A huge thank you to all the teachers, volunteers and families who made this night a massive success. We can’t wait to see what our future scientists and engineers dream up next!
